When Sydney-based design agency Squad Ink was tasked with naming, branding, packaging, and launching Archie Rose Distilling Co., they saw it as an opportunity to create something truly special. The result is a range of spirits that not only taste exquisite but also come packaged in bottles that are works of art in themselves.
The inspiration for the design came from the history of distilling in Sydney and the area where Archie Rose is located, Rosebery. Squad Ink discovered a fascinating anecdote about a group of distillers who used the name "Archie" to refer to their comrades, providing a sense of anonymity. This story became the foundation for the brand name, Archie Rose, and set the tone for the design.
The packaging design features a custom-molded bullet-style bottle with a heavy-weighted base, reminiscent of the copper pot stills at Archie Rose. The 360-degree recessed label indentation across the body allows for a full-wrapped belly label, which becomes a hallmark design feature. The labels themselves are beautifully detailed and intriguing, inviting consumers to explore every piece of information they offer.
Squad Ink pushed the boundaries of short-run digital label printing to create a cost-effective solution for multiple releases. They used textured cotton-based stocks, detailed embossing, and high build varnishes to add a luxurious tactile element to the product. The result is packaging that not only looks stunning but also communicates the quality and authenticity of the spirits inside.
One of the unique features of Archie Rose's packaging is the tailored spirits range. Consumers can craft their own spirit by selecting their preferred botanicals, and this customization is reflected in the packaging. Each bottle is marked with the consumer's initials and a list of the botanicals they chose, adding a personal touch to the experience.
Archie Rose's packaging design is not only visually appealing but also functional. The bottles are encased in canvas bottle bags, adding an extra layer of luxury. Breaking the tamper seal and removing the wooden-capped stopper reveals the enticing aromas of the spirits, inviting consumers to savor the experience.
The project took two years to complete and was predominantly based in Sydney, Australia. Squad Ink's meticulous research and attention to detail ensured that the packaging design captured the essence of Archie Rose Distilling Co. and its rich history.
The design has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2015. This recognition highlights the excellence, innovation, and artistic skill that went into creating the packaging for Archie Rose.
Archie Rose Distilling Co. and Squad Ink have successfully revived Sydney's distilling heritage with their craft spirits and captivating packaging design. The combination of history, luxury, and personalization makes Archie Rose a standout in the world of craft spirits.
